John R. Emery Gates, 68, passed away peacefully and entered Heaven on Friday, July 10, 2026, in Palmetto, Florida.

He is survived by his loving wife, Valerie Gates; his six children, Mindy Boyles, Holly Cobb, Brooke Cimbalo, Erika Sperry, J.R. Gates, and Sandra Gates; his nine grandchildren, Marcus, Mercedes, Miles, Dalton, Hunter, Nevaeh, Santo, Sophie, and Sam; and his three great-grandchildren, Kalani, Delilah, and Liam.

John was born in Utica, New York, and joined the United States Navy after graduating from high school. Following his military service, he pursued his passion for fixing things and built a career as a mechanic. In 1996, he moved his family to Florida to leave behind the harsh winters and embrace a warmer climate, where he enjoyed riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycles and his lifelong love of speed.

Above all, John cherished his family. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, creating memories that will be treasured forever. He had an incredible sense of humor that was truly one of a kind. His quick wit, laughter, and ability to make others smile will be remembered by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. He also had a lifelong love for Italian food and never turned down a sweet dessert—especially Dolly Parton's cheesecake, which always brought a smile to his face.

John will be deeply missed but forever remembered with love by all who knew him.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at the VFW Post 2488 in Palmetto, Florida, from 12- 6 p.m. to honor John's life and the many memories he leaves behind. Family and friends are invited to join us as we celebrate the wonderful man he was.
