On Monday, June 8, 2026, at 12:45 p.m., Emma Jean Hammons (Reeves), a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister, passed away peacefully in Bradenton, Florida, at the age of 83. After a long and courageous battle with cancer, Emma went home to be with the Lord, her unwavering faith in God guiding her until the very end.
Emma was born on February 26, 1943, in Troy, Alabama, to her parents, L.B. Reeves, D.C. Hester, and Eva Reeves Hester. She spent her early years in Alabama before moving to Florida, where she graduated from Manatee High School in 1961. Following her education, Emma began a career dedicated to serving her community. She worked diligently in downtown Manatee County searching titles and later as a clerk for the Manatee County Courthouse.
Emma’s life was deeply rooted in her Christian faith. She held a strong belief in God and Jesus Christ and often reminded those around her that "God is in control." Her faith provided comfort and strength throughout her life and inspired those who knew her. Emma’s family takes solace in knowing she is now walking the golden streets of heaven.
Emma was predeceased by her beloved husband, Lawrence Hammons of Bradenton; her father, L.B. Reeves of Troy, Al. and D.C. Hester of Bradenton; her mother Eva Reeves Hester of Bradenton; and her brother Mervin "Jim" Reeves of Bradenton. Their memories remained close to Emma’s heart throughout her life.
She is survived by a loving family who will cherish her memory forever: her son Tim Varner (Maggie Varner) of Imlay City, Michigan; her daughter Pamela Dowell of Bradenton, Florida; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; stepdaughter Debra Jackson of Bradenton; stepson Larry Hammons of Ohio; three step-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Emma also leaves behind her devoted sisters Ann Swift (husband Jim) of Canada, Mary Alice Reeves of Jasper, Alabama, and Mary Sue Davis (husband Goble) of Winchester, Kentucky. Her faithful companion, Scout, a little dog who brought joy to Emma’s days with unconditional love and loyalty, will miss her dearly.
Emma was known for her witty sense of humor and warm personality that brightened every room she entered. Her caring nature extended not only to family but also to friends and all who had the privilege of knowing her. A woman of grace and resilience, she embodied love and kindness throughout her life.
Emma’s legacy as a devoted Wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend will live on through the countless lives she touched. She will be deeply missed by all who knew them.
May Emma Jean Hammons’ memory bring comfort to those who loved them as they celebrate a life well-lived and honor their enduring faith in God’s promise.
